Week in Review {HAPPY HALLOWEEN!}

Happy Halloween, bloggy readers!

What are you doing to celebrate All Hallow's Eve? I'm staying in and relaxing after a busy day spent grading and lesson planning. We didn't have any big plans this year since Ricky has an important case coming up in court next week and I had all this last-minute grading to do. But last night we watched this scary movie called The Evil Dead that is pretty much nightmare-inducing. If we hadn't followed that up with Jurassic Park 2, I don't think I would have slept well last night!

The rest of my weekend has been pretty chill. I needed it after that hellish work week! Not that anything particularly bad happened at work or anything, it was just a mountain of little annoyances that kept piling up. Which made me REALLY appreciate my weekend.

Here are my blog posts from the past week in case you missed any:

Week in Review

Yeah, yeah, I know -- last week's Week in Review post is a little late. You can blame this for my tardiness:

That's right, I was too busy reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows yesterday to blog. And you know what? I had a great time rereading that book, such a great time, I didn't even miss blogging. Or doing anything else for that matter, hehe. This was my third time rereading the series and I'm always struck by how well constructed Rowling's plot sequence is throughout the series, especially in the last book.

Have you read the Harry Potter series? If so, which book is your favorite? (Mine is a tie between the Prisoner of Azkaban and the Deathly Hallows.)

Hope you are having a great day! :-)

Week in Review

This is going to be a very short but sweet Week in Review post. I have my thesis defense on Tuesday and I have been busy making last-minute changes and preparing myself mentally for the kinds of questions my committee will probably ask me.

I still have to make the changes the graduate office recommended I make on my thesis -- I got it back from them last week with their penciled in corrections and suggestions, and happily, they weren't as numerous as I'd feared they'd be. But they do seem to hold an unusual prejudice against the word "this" -- the word is circled practically every time I use it in my manuscript. I guess they want me to replace it with another word, to try and vary the sentence structure up a bit and make it more specific, but still... "This" is a pretty common word! Brian Eno even has an amazing song with that word as its very title.

If any of my readers have gone through a thesis defense before, especially in English Literature, please get in touch with me! I am sick to my stomach with fear curious about the process.

When I wasn't freaking out over my impending thesis defense this week, I was grading papers, hanging out with Ricky, reading some more Harry Potter (finished Order of the Phoenix and now I'm well into Half-Blood Prince), going to see a friend perform in a community theater production of "Guys and Dolls," and visiting some friends of ours in West Palm Beach. I truthfully don't know where last week went -- it was a frenzied, crazy-fast week.

Tell me that's not the cutest thing you've ever seen... Right? Well, I hope you have yourself a great Sunday. :-)

P.S.) I apologize for the lack of blog comments lately -- I haven't had much time to visit your lovely blogs, but I promise that will all change after Tuesday!

(Birthday) Week in Review

Do you know what day it is today, bloggy readers? Yes, it is 10/10/10, which is cool in and of itself, but it also happens to be my birthday. Which is pretty cool, too. My belly is full from my birthday breakfast of chocolate chip pancakes (yum) and I've got a cup of hot peppermint tea by my side (to help digest the chocolate explosion that was my breakfast), which can only mean one thing -- it's time to write my (Birthday) Week in Review post. And away we go...

So I was lame in the blogging department this week -- I only posted three times:
But I'm going to make it up to you by telling you (and showing you!) all about my week-long birthday celebration, which began last weekend in Orlando. (Yes, I celebrate my birthday for 7 days. You should try it some time. It's awesome.)

Last Saturday morning, Ricky was at my house bright and early at 6 AM. After some last minute packing and an emergency stop at Dunkin Donuts (must.have.caffeine.), we were on our way!

Nothing but blue skies up ahead... oh, and suicidal bug splatter on the windshield.
The weather, as you can tell from the picture above, was perfect road trip weather. Not too hot, not too cold, just perfect. We played our favorite CD's and sang along, stopping when we got hungry, and talking about everything and nothing.

We arrived at Islands of Adventure about 1 PM. I was jumping up and down like a little kid, so eager to get my first glimpse of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. And reader, I have to say... It didn't disappoint.

woo...

oooo....

ooow....
As you can see from the pictures, they did an amazing job creating the world of Harry Potter. Walking into Hogwarts felt like you were walking into the movies. Plus they play music from the film soundtracks, which really helps get you into the mood. Here are some pictures from both Hogwarts and Hogsmeade:

I look short in this picture, but I'm really not.

I love the effect of the fake snow on the rooftops of "Hogsmeade." Especially when it's 80-something degrees out.

Look, that's a quaffle! A quaffle that you use to play in Quidditch! An actual quaffle! (Okay, I'll stop geeking out now.)

Ollivander's wand shop.

Zonko's. Please love my grossed-out expression over the puking pastilles.

Ricky and the Hogwarts Express conductor.
I love how authentic the stores were. Although Ollivander's had a line to get in, it was worth it just to see the wand-choosing experience. We got to see a little boy (with Harry Potter glasses but a Syltherin scarf marring the Harry Potter look) go through the experience, and I have to say, it's pretty cool. There's music, there's wind and light effects, and I confess I got chills.

Though I was a teensy bit bummed I wasn't selected for the wand experience (they randomly select someone from the audience), Ricky made my day by getting me Hermione's wand. It's a replica from the movie and so, so amazing to hold. Like you feel like you can actually produce an Expecto Patronum or something. (Or at the very least, brandish it menacingly.) Next time we go, we have to get one for Ricky -- he's thinking of getting Harry's wand.

I couldn't resist buying something from Zonko's shop -- I walked out with a pygmy puff, those little pink puff balls that Ginny is seen carrying on her shoulder in the film. The cashier working the register asked me if I wanted to name it, and so I did, and then he proceeded to ring a bell and yell, quite loudly, that my pygmy puff has been adopted into a Muggle household. And I smiled and blushed like a madwoman.

Here's my pygmy puff, "Lulu," my Hermione wand, and my beat up copy of Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix, which I'm currently rereading. (Yes, I realize I'm being rather slow with this particular rereading cycle. I'm trying to time it with the movie!)
The cashier, along with everyone else working in WWoHP, is dressed up in costumes from the films, to help authenticate your experience, I guess. They even go around calling you "Muggles," which I did not enjoy much, I do confess. The guy working the line inside of the Forbidden Journey ride had a snarly, mean way of calling us "Muggles" that made me want to trip him. For. Real.

With that being said, the Forbidden Journey ride was a good time. I won't give anything away in case you ever get the chance to visit WWoHP, but suffice it to say that you feel as if you are part of a quidditch match. Pretty cool.

Other cool things about WWoHP: Butterbeer! (Delicious.) Pumpkin juice! (Surprisingly tasty, too.) Random performances by the Beaux Batons and the Durmstrangs! And so much more. We honestly did not take enough pictures because we spent so much time just oohing and aaahing over everything. Oh well, there's always next time.

Below are some other pictures from the rest of Islands of Adventure, along with Universal Studios, the Halloween Horror Nights experience, and Sea World, where we spent the morning last Monday before coming back home.

Ricky at the entrance to Islands of Adventure.

Some pretty store fronts in Islands of Adventure. Plus some random people.

The Incredible Hulk coaster, one of my favey-fave coasters.

Me, acting like a fool in the Jurassic Park store in Islands of Adventure. No big deal.

The Esqueleto Muerto scare-zone in Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios. (We would have taken more pictures but we were too busy trying to stay away from the scary men wielding chainsaws.)

One of the gorgeous views at Sea World.

The Dolphin Nursery at Sea World. I was dying to jump into the pool and swim with them, but Ricky recommended against it. Boo.
And there are even more pictures that I will post on Facebook when I get around to it. Including one or two from this weekend, when I celebrated my birthday some more at Gulfstream Park with some friends and also from today, when I will surely celebrate some more-more with Ricky. Good times. But hey -- you only get to celebrate your birthday on 10/10/10 once, right? So you've got to make it count.

 Thanks for reading! :)

Week in Review

I got home a couple of hours ago from my mini-vacation, and I have sooo much to tell you and show you about my weekend at Orlando, but I also have a TON of grading and lesson-planning to catch up on, so that post will have to wait. But you can expect that later this week for sure.

It's always a little bittersweet coming home from a trip away -- as good as it feels to slip into your comfy clothes and slide into bed, you miss the novelty of travel. And I especially miss Ricky!!! (Yes, already. :p)

Week in Review

Like I posted on Friday, this has been a busy week, work- and school-wise. It's been nice just relaxing this weekend. I did not open my work bag all day Saturday, just spending time during the day dithering on the interwebs and then getting together with Ricky at night for dinner and a movie.

I slept over his place last night and woke up at 11 AM this morning positively starving. But I could find nothing edible in his house other than a few stale Triscuits. Happily, Ricky unearthed a package of frozen hampao when he (finally) woke up, and he steam-cooked one for me. Reader, if you have never had a hampao before, it is a steam-cooked pork bun made of pillow-soft bread. And the one Ricky made me today was better than any I've had in a restaurant. No lie. And this from a frozen hampao. The brand is called O'Tasty, and you know, it was o-tasty. It really was.

Well, I think I somewhat redeemed myself in the blogging department by posting four entries in two days. Here are all of this week's posts in case you missed any:
And I'm off to go make myself another hampao. Here is what hampao look like, in case you are curious:

Week in Review

This week hasn't been particularly active in the blogging department. Apologies! It's been a busy week for me. On Tuesday, I had Open House at night at my school from 6:30-9:15 pm. I got to meet my students' parents and discuss my class expectations with them. Many more parents showed up than I expected, which is nice. It's wonderful to see parents involved in their children's education -- this isn't something you see a lot as a high school teacher, sad to say.

As tiring as Tuesday was, having to work a full day then come back to school at night, the rest of the week felt like a marathon, too. When I wasn't shaping young peoples' minds, I was helping my fellow teachers plan for our Hispanic Luncheon, which will be held this week. On Thursday, I went to FIU (my university) right after work to discuss some final thesis edits with one of my committee members. We also scheduled my thesis defense -- October 19th, a Tuesday, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. (EEEEK!) Seriously, though, it's exciting to know I'll be graduating soon.

On Friday after school, I went with my co-worker/good friend for our biweekly salon appointment. I went crazy and decided to paint my nails blue. I'm still undecided about them. On Saturday I worked all day grading my students' assignments. I've got to admit, it's a lot easier keeping up with the grading this year now that I no longer teach AP English Language (the numbers were too low this year due to dual enrollment). While I miss teaching the course, I definitely don't miss lugging home all those essays every week!

Today I'm going to work on my final thesis edits and maybe go grocery shopping with the boyf. I'm also going to try and finish reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. My rereading of the series has been delayed by my work and thesis responsibilities, but I'm excited to dive back into it, especially since they're going to be releasing another film trailer this Wednesday for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Before I close, I want to share something I learned today, something that has me VERY upset. The book Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson has been getting some unfair negative attention lately due to this man named Wesley Scroggins who is advocating for the banning of this book. He claims the book is pornographic, when it is NOT, and he wants to ban it from classrooms.

As a woman, a writer, and a teacher, I am fuming about this. The best part of it all is that Mr. Scroggins apparently did not read the book, because his claims have no merit. I have read the book and I can tell you, there are no sexually explicit scenes in the book at all. I figure, if you're going to push for the banning of a particular book, at least READ THE DAMN BOOK. Don't just go by the blurb on the back cover and create something out of nothing.

Please read the author's recent blog post on this, and I encourage you to watch the video at the end of Anderson's post, too. It will make you appreciate the book -- and our freedom of speech, granted to us in the Constitution -- even more.

Have you read Speak? What are your thoughts on its attempted banning? Share your thoughts in the comments!

Week in Review

Even though this was a short work week, having Monday off and then Thursday as a Teacher Planning Day, I still felt wrecked on Friday. I think I'm still getting accustomed to teaching freshmen. Not to mention waking up at 6 AM. (Case in point: I woke up today at 12:45 PM.) I am soooo not a morning person. Why did I agree to become a teacher again?!

Oh yeah -- because I actually love the little monsters. (And I might be a bit of a masochist.)

This weekend has been relaxing and yummy. On Friday, I ate dinner with Ricky and his family. We had some awesome, authentic Mexican food. On Saturday Ricky and I went to one of our favorite restaurants, Titanic. They brew their own beer, which is amazing, and I happen to think their club sandwich and bread pudding are out of this world. So if you're ever in Miami, check them out. You won't be sorry. And invite me so I won't be sorry, either.

Just now I found myself doing something kind of funny -- opening the fridge, not finding anything I liked, then leaving and coming back in a ten minutes or so to open it again and peruse the contents of the fridge, as if they would've magically changed in the last ten minutes. Have you ever done this, too? Also -- why has this blog post been all about food?

I guess I might be hungry. Time to go check if the fridge has been magically restocked in my absence.

Here are my blog posts from this week in case you missed any of them:

Week in Review

I haven't done one of these posts in a while! I guess the start of the new school year has been keeping me busy. This week I was certainly occupied with writing lesson plans, creating seating charts, and perfecting my classroom management skills. There are already some students I know will be keeping me on my toes this year -- I can just tell. I think the fact that I learned their names on the very first day is very telling. ;)

When I wasn't keeping my kidlets in order this week, I was (finally!) finishing Mockingjay, which I adored. I was also going shopping for groceries with le boyf, which I always adore. There's just something fun about going grocery shopping, especially when it's at Target. (Even though I invariably end up buying more than just groceries.) This week I also finished organizing my closet and throwing out a ton of worn out shoes I never wear anymore, plus bagging up some of my clothing which I also no longer wear to donate to the Veterans' Association in my city.

I feel so much better now that my closet is decent again. I cleared up a ton of new space should the urge to buy new clothes and shoes arise. Which no doubt it will soon, what with Fall beginning to take over clothing stores.

Week in Review

Today is the last Sunday of my summer vacation, and a week from tomorrow, I will be greeting a fresh new batch of students. (Don't you love how I describe them like they're cookies? Awesome. But I digress.) On Tuesday I report back to work and start readying my classroom. And my vacation will be officially over.

I know I should be sad that I'm all out of summer, but I can't complain. It's been an incredible summer. I finished my master's degree in English Literature. I saw lots of amazing movies with Ricky. (Toy Story 3! Eclipse! Inception!) We both ate more than our fair share of frozen yogurt. (Thank you, Menchie's and Yogurtland for being so amazing. You stay classy.) Season 3 of True Blood has turned out to be the best season of them all. And the icing on the summer cake of goodness is that I got to sleep in late, late, late. I will sure miss that on Tuesday morning when my alarm goes off at 6:00 AM. (Sob.)

This weekend was a great way to say goodbye to my summer. Ricky had a friend visiting from out of town, and on Friday we took him to one of our favorite bars, The Pub. Saturday we went to the Morikami Japanese Gardens and Museums for their Bon Festival. (Pictures will be forthcoming, as soon as I can locate my camera.) Today was a lazy day -- we took our friend to the airport, then we ate dinner with Ricky's family and I loafed at his house reading the fourth Harry Potter book.

Tomorrow I am going to be getting up at 7:00 AM in order to reacquaint my body with getting up at ungodly hours. (I know it's an hour later than what my regular work wake up time is, but tomorrow is  the last day of vacation.) After thoroughly caffeinating myself, I will hit the stores to buy some classroom supplies. I might even hit the mall, if I'm feeling up to it, because I was unable to visit it this weekend.

Here are my posts from this past week in case you missed any:

Here is a picture from Morikami's official website of the Bon Festival. My pictures will be posted later this week!

Hope you had a great Sunday! And for those of you who watched True Blood tonight along with me -- how crazy was tonight's episode? And how are we going to deal when the season ends after the next three episodes?!!

Week in Review

This is my second to last Sunday of summer vacation. I may not be living it up in Orlando like I hoped I'd be on Friday. But damn it, I still plan on living it up today.

Starting with sleeping in. I love sleep! I puffy-red-heart-with-an-arrow-through-it sleep. Given my usual tendencies, I'd stay up late every night and sleep in late every day if I could. I have practically become nocturnal this summer, as I do every summer.

And it's been a good summer this year. I have slept in a lot. I have lived in pajamas, getting dressed up only to leave the house. I have read piles and piles of books. I finished my thesis. I started writing poetry again. I even got one of my poems published in a book! So I have a lot to be thankful for. Even if I'm going to have to start rearranging my circadian rhythm next week.

Sorry this post is a little late today -- I woke up feeling under the weather. Perhaps it's just that I feel out of it, but I can't believe it's already August. The weeks have just been flying by this summer. Where did my vacation go???

I have to report back to work in 16 days. Which sucks. But at least this has been a good summer -- I got my thesis done! I got to spend some quality time with le boyf! I got to read lots of great non-thesis-y books after finishing my thesis!

Something else awesome about this summer? True Blood. Did you see tonight's episode???? I canNOT wait until next Sunday!

I hope your Sunday was a great one!

Week in Review

This past week was lazy but good. I went to see Inception with Ricky (it was amazing!). I played my new favorite video game, Dragon Quest IX. I got my hair and nails did at the salon -- yay for girl time. Ricky and I saw a few more Godzilla movies (he's on a big Godzilla kick right now).

The weekend was kind of blah. Friday we didn't do much because of Tropical Storm Bonnie, which wound up giving us nothing more than a few heavy storms. Nothing major. Saturday I spent some time researching lucid dreams, which I became interested in after watching Inception. Normally I am very bad at remembering my dreams, let alone recognizing when I'm in one. But this past week, I was able to resume a dream for the first time ever, which I've always wanted to do. I was able to resume the same dream twice in one night -- all I remember was being in a building, and how each time I resumed the dream, I entered a new room. It was weird, and I wish I could remember more, but it's too hazy. I think I will keep experimenting with this and maybe start keeping a journal by the bed to record what I can remember from my dreams, as psychologists recommend.

Today I want to go somewhere and have a drink with le boyf, just to get out of the house. Nowhere too crazy, maybe just a quiet bar where I can relax and sip on a glass of wine. Yes, that sounds like a plan.

Week in Review

Last week was a strange week for me -- it was the first week all summer that I didn't have any thesis work to do. I'm still waiting for my thesis committee to finish reading the entire draft and let me know if I need to make any changes, and in the meantime, I've felt a little adrift. So it was strange to finally have time to relax and start enjoying my summer vacation.

But just because it was a strange week doesn't mean I didn't have fun! I watched the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice -- which I absolutely adored. I began playing the addictive new DS game, Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies. Le boyf and I watched all the Godzilla movies we could lay our hands on -- they're so cheesy but fun. We drove up to Plantation to browse the comic book store TATE'S and to nom on some yummy barbecue at Smokey Bones. Oh, and we went to Menchie's for some frozen yogurt. A lot. I mean, a lot, a lot -- one day last week, I went twice. Not that I'm complaining or anything. (What can I say, I have a sweet tooth.) They had a new flavor I'd never tried before, red velvet. And it was amazing.

We didn't get to see Inception yet, but we're planning to soon, maybe even today. I keep hearing how awesome it is. Feel free to gush about it in the comments -- but don't post any spoilers!

Week in Review

This was a very good week for me. Even though I stayed up till an ungodly hour more than one night working on the last chapter of my thesis. Even though I felt like tearing out my hair just trying to make sense of my university's thesis manual. Even though it was so hot I thought my bones were going to melt. It was a good week because I got a lot of work done. It was a good week because I had friends with more experience (and patience!) than me help me figure out the thesis manual. And it was a good week because I officially finished my thesis (very) early this morning at 5:00 AM. All 66 pages of it. :-D

Other good things that happened this week:
  • I saw "Eclipse" for the second time in the theater and liked it even better than the first time.
  • I bought a wonderful goose down pillow at K-Mart to replace one of my crap-flat pillows. And now that annoying crick in my neck is gone and I'm sleeping like a baby again.
  • I went to the salon and got my hair and nails "did." Sometimes, you just need it -- both physically and psychologically!
  • My boyfriend proved for the 9,839,145th time what an amazing boyfriend he is by taking me on Starbucks runs, giving me back rubs, and just hugging me when I needed it most this week -- without my even having to ask for it.
Today I plan on watching the final match of the world cup to root for my team, Spain. Plus I'm excited about the return of "True Blood" tonight after a week-long hiatus. (Anyone else in withdrawal?!) I also need to fill out some forms for graduation, as I'm meeting with some of my thesis committee members tomorrow to start preparing for graduation. It's crazy to even write that down -- a month ago, I wasn't that optimistic about finishing my thesis, let alone thinking about planning for graduation. And now my thesis is done. The hard part is over.

A few of my readers have told me lately that they, too, had difficulty finishing their master's degree. Let my experience prove that you can do it. If I can do it, you can do it. It has taken me double the amount of time I thought it would, because I was too busy with work, had writer's block, was intimidated -- enter the x, y, z reason of your choice. But the point is that I did it and I will graduate in the Fall, which proves the old maxim true once and for all: "Better late than never!"

Week in Review

The first half of this week kind of sucked in that I still had the cold from hell. But the second half was great. :D

Monday, I spent all day with my boyf, thankful I had the day off from work so I could recuperate some more. Most of it was spent in bed, reading.

Tuesday, I wrapped up the book The Five People You Meet in Heaven with my juniors, which was bittersweet. I hope to reread the book again next year with my future students. On Tuesday, Ricky and I also saw the movie "Whisper of the Heart" from Studio Ghibli which I loved. Amazing, amazing film.

Wednesday, I began giving my seniors their final exams, which was also bittersweet. I can't believe they're graduating! :*) On Wednesday, I also found out I'm definitely rehired for next year, plus I'm teaching freshmen English and SAT/ACT Verbal Prep. -- no AP English because the numbers were too low. I'm kind of sad because I will miss teaching AP, but at the same time, it's a bit of a relief knowing I won't have to grade all those essays next year! I also found out they are relocating me to the main building (my school is comprised of two buildings: the original, or "old" building and the main, or "new" building). So I will have to start moving my stuff -- and soon!

Thursday was the day I finally felt like myself again -- I wasn't as congested and throat-achey as before. On Thursday, I also went to a luncheon celebrating the retirement of one of the most beloved teachers at my school, Mrs. Palmore. It was a great time -- she will be missed next year.

Friday, I gave my last group of seniors their finals and spent the afternoon reading their dedications in my yearbook ... and crying my silly little eyes out. After work, Ricky took me to The Pub where we had beer and shared some fried pickles and a plate of fish and chips. Yum! Then we went to Barnes & Nobles where we bought the newly re-published books by J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter Schoolbooks: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them/Quidditch Through the Ages. (Both came in a box set.) They are a must-have if you are a fan!

Saturday, I slept in late and graded some finals, and then Ricky and I went to Anthony's Coal Fired Pizza for some of their amazing pizza before going to pick up Ricky's dad at the airport -- he spent a week in Haiti helping the sick and injured with other doctors from his center. He showed us the pictures he took during his stay, and it was so sad to see how devastated Haiti still is after the earthquake. They are still badly in need of our help. I'm planning on donating more money. I think anyone who can should do the same. It's going to take a lot of work -- and money -- for Haiti to get back on its feet.

Today I just plan on relaxing, maybe reorganizing my closet. Next week is my last week of work, and since I'm spending only the first three days with my kids, the last two picking up my classroom (and moving to my new one!), I can put all my work clothes to the back of the closet now. Until August anyway! :D

Week in Review

So this post is a little late because I've been languishing all weekend in bed with a bad cold. :-/ The only day I ventured out of bed was on Saturday when I went to my department head's retirement party at his amazing house. I felt decidedly less than amazing, so I had the boyf take me home early where I promptly collapsed into bed.

I've been suffering from this cold for a week now, but it didn't get bad until Thursday. I hadn't taken any days off from work because the school year is so close to finishing (just 7 more days!!!), and I guess my body knew it could collapse with the weekend so close. How I managed to drag myself to work on Friday, I'll never know.

When I wasn't blowing my nose or hacking up a lung this week, I was planning my students' final exams, reading the latest spoilery film news on "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" and "Eclipse", and reading Patricia Veryan.

All my lovely plans for this long weekend -- going to the Keys with some friends, watching "Sex and the City 2," eating some yummy food -- yeah, none of that happened. However, I'm currently typing this from my boyf's house while he naps in bed next to me. He brought me over here yesterday and has been taking care of me ever since, bringing meals to me, giving me cold medicine, tucking me into bed. And I have never slept better -- I think I slept like 12 hours last night! So I really can't complain. It may not have been the weekend I wanted, but it's been the weekend I needed.
